The short version:
• Human trials most often use around 3 g/day of lion's mane.
• A typical mushroom-coffee blend may contain 50–250 mg of it.
• Concentrated extracts can do more with less weight — but only if the beta-glucan percentage is disclosed.
• "Proprietary blend" means you can't do this math at all. That's usually the point.
What the studies used
The most frequently cited lion's mane trial gave older adults with mild cognitive complaints roughly 3 grams per day for 16 weeks. Scores improved during supplementation — and drifted back after they stopped.
Other trials have used varying amounts with mixed results, including one in healthy college students at a notably high daily dose that found no cognitive effect. So the evidence is genuinely encouraging in some populations and genuinely inconclusive in others — but almost all of it lives in the gram range, not the milligram range.
The math on a typical product

Notice the trap in row one: a big-sounding total, divided across six mushrooms, leaves a small amount of each. It's technically accurate and practically meaningless.
Why extract ≠ powder (and why that matters)
An extract concentrates the active compounds, so a gram of extract isn't the same as a gram of raw powder. That's legitimate — it's how you get a real dose into a drinkable serving.
But it's also where the category gets slippery. An extract ratio like "8:1" tells you 8 units of raw material went in for 1 unit out. It hints at concentration but isn't standardized or independently verified.
The number that actually means something: beta-glucan percentage. Beta-glucans are the measured active compound. A product disclosing "≥25% beta-glucan" is telling you something checkable. A product advertising "40% polysaccharides" may be counting grain starch — a bigger number that means less.
How to check any product in 60 seconds
1. Find the per-ingredient milligrams. No number, or only a blend total?
Stop — you can't evaluate it.
2. Check the form. "Fruiting body" is the mushroom. "Mycelium on grain" is
largely starch.
3. Look for a beta-glucan %, not "polysaccharides."
4. See if there's a third-party lab report (COA) you can actually read.
If a product passes all four, you can make an informed decision. Most don't pass two.
